Studying and Test Taking Tips

Help your child by Getting Specific with Studying

• Seek information.  Ask about the test.  Find out what it will cover and what types of questions will be asked.

• Organize materials.  Make logical sections to study like homework, quizzes, handouts, etc.

• Make a study plan.  Schedule time to review.

• Take a practice test.  Make up practice questions.

• Study under “test” conditions.  No TV.  No radio or other distractions.

• Look at old tests.  Learn from past mistakes such as failing to read all of the instructions.

Help your child by Getting Rid of Test Stress

• Don’t stay up late.

• Eat healthy meals.

• Wear a favorite outfit.

• Learn to relax.

• Be positive.

• Face fears.

It’s Test Time – Have your child:

• Scan the test.

• Read carefully.

• Look for clue words.

• Remember that all test questions are not alike.

• Save time to look over your answers.

How else can Parents Help?

• Make school a priority.

• Don’t put too much pressure on your child.

• Judge your child’s success by his/her effort more than his/her grades.

• Review test terms such as list, compare and contrast.

• Help with learning.

• Build your child’s confidence.  Tell him/her you believe in them and that they can and will succeed…show your pride when they do.
