Author Bill Harley comes to WES

Fourth and fifth graders at Westport Elementary were able to hear how some of their favorite characters came to life on October 4th when author Bill Harley came to visit. Students in the fifth grade read “Night of the Spadefoot Toad” as their summer reading assignment. This book introduced them to great human characters and many animal species in Massachusetts. A group of 5th graders even put on a skit for Mr. Harley from one of the chapters in the book, which he loved. Fourth graders did a class read from the Charlie Bumpers series, Charlie Bumpers vs. The Teacher of the Year. After discussing the book in detail and creating digital posters about their favorite part in Media Class students were able see how the books were developed and written. We can not thank the FOWL(Friends of Westport Library, WES-MAC PTO, Westport Cultural Council, and Helen E. Ellis Charitable Trust enough for providing this enriching opportunity for our students.
"This program is supported in part by a grant from the (name of local cultural council), a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency."

Author Rob Buyea visits with our 6th graders!

Westport Elementary students in 6th grade were able to have a real connection to their summer read on Friday, September 15th. Rob Buyea, author of “because of mr. terupt”, was our guest and the students were treated to insight and laughs from this amazing writer. Mr. Buyea shared how he became a writer and what would help students become better writers themselves, for instance keeping a writing journal at all times, and to be a reader. He stated, “You never know when inspiration will hit, so have a journal and write down those times and you’ll have great pieces to add to your stories.” He explained how he takes bits and pieces of people he has met to make up his characters and even puts a little of himself in the books. After speaking to approximately 150 students and staff, Mr. Buyea graciously signed over 100 copies of his books for the students. Students will not soon forget meeting this author and are so looking forward to his new books. We at Westport Elementary are so thankful to the Westport Cultural Council, Helen E. Ellis Charitable Trust, FOWL(Friends of the Westport Library) and the WES-MAC PTO for their generous donations to make this opportunity a reality.
