March 9, 2010
Dear Parents/Guardians and Friends,
Tonight we take the first step in deciding what kind of
schools we want for our children in Westport. Those who come to town meeting
will decide whether they want good schools or mediocre ones. Those who show
up will “be the voice of the Town” and there will be no one else to blame. I
will be standing up for what is right – taking care of the needs of our
children. Even if you think there are enough people coming, I encourage you
to come out tonight and participate.
We have made arrangements for taking care of students during
the Town meeting. We have a shuttle bus that will go between the WMS
(student drop off area) to the WHS. We have cancelled all activities and
asked the principals to have teachers hold off assigning homework for the
night. We only have one article to fix our budget deficit, so the meeting
should not be long. The stage is set and ready for you to do your part. If
there is a 2/3 vote to move the funds from stabilization to the school
budget, this step will gets us through this year.
The next step will be dependent upon whether the town will
decide to allow an increase above 2.5% to the tax levy limit on the annual
election ballot on April 13, 2010 for the next school year. Later in May,
we will go back to town meeting to discuss the 2010-2011 school year budget.
It is an awesome responsibility to decide the future of not
just your children, but all the other children who attend our schools. I
hope you join me tonight.
Sincerely,
Dr. Carlos M. Colley
Superintendent of the Westport Community Schools
