Recognizing the extent to which school culture impacts conditions for teaching and learning, the Westport Community Schools leadership team continues to focus on improvement efforts, in accordance with District Improvement Plan Goal #3. An important part of this initiative involves capturing stakeholder input, and school-specific Views of Climate and Learning (VOCAL)
As the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's (DESE) website indicates, "VOCAL is based on the conceptual framework of the U.S. Department of Education's School Climate Surveys, which focuses on measuring students' perception of three dimensions of school climate: engagement, safety, and environment." Thus, the leadership team felt that using the same instrument for students, staff, families, and community members, with only minor modifications, would allow us to compare perceptions in these critical areas. DESE will provide data from the grade 4, 5, 8 and 10 Westport students who were administered the survey earlier in 2019 for review.
Please take a few moments to visit your child’s school website to respond to the anonymous survey no later than Friday, January 10 . Your feedback is critically important and will inform subsequent climate and culture initiatives throughout the District. Should you have any questions regarding the survey, please contact Director of Curriculum Darren Elwell. Thank you, in advance, for your participation!
