We have completed our first safety drill for 2019. We are proud of how all students and staff handled this tabletop exercise drill. Students had the opportunity to problem solve how they might respond to an intruder in the building.
During this drill, we discussed different options that we would consider if there was an intruder in the building. We stressed the importance of careful listening. We explained that the school does lots of things to keep students and staff safe and that the safety drills are just one more measure to help protect everyone in the building.
At home, you can talk with your children about the drill from today. Ask them to explain to you what they learned and why it is important. Please stress that there are many safeguards in place to ensure student safety, but that it is important for us to practice these drills. It is VERY unlikely that we will ever have to implement these strategies. You can explain that it is similar to practicing fire drills or bus evacuation drills. We don’t believe we will ever need to use these drills, but it is important to know what to do in case of an emergency.
In February, we will be having another drill, where students and staff will practice the strategy of lockdown/barricading their classroom. We will provide you more information about this strategy next month.
