Thank you Bill Harley!

Thanks again to author Bill Harley for visiting with our 4th graders.
Mr. Harley's visit was a great enrichment opportunity for the students and it created an authentic learning experience. The students were very engaged as they learned how the authors go through the writing process. Mr. Harley was able to share his struggles and his firsthand experiences of being a writer and how it can be challenging but rewarding in the end.

Thank you Rob Buyea!

Westport Elementary School 6th grade students were treated again to author Rob Buyea. Every incoming 6th grader is asked to read because of mr. terupt over the summer. Then they hit the ground running in their ELA classes dissecting the story and it's characters. When Mr. Buyea arrives at our school he gives the students a little background about himself and they are very surprised to learn that he was a former 3rd grade teacher. Mr. Buyea's teaching skills and funny personality keep the students entertained for an hour and a half. They learn about how he develops his characters and stories and the skills necessary to be a good writer, especially the one of first you need to be a good reader! Every student then tries their hands at creating characters in his writing workshop, where he reads and gives feedback on the student's stories. This amazing one on one program with a real author is so beneficial for the students, they are able to make connections of their school work to the real world. We at Westport Elementary are so thankful to the Westport Cultural Council, and Helen E. Ellis Charitable Trust, and the WES-MAC PTO for their generous donations to make this opportunity a reality.
