Adult Education

February 2019

Hello Westport Community:
The Westport Community Schools is pleased to introduce our first adult education series.  These classes range from opportunities for members of the community to get some physical activity or learn a new skill.  The classes will also provide a chance for members of the community to utilize our school buildings as a community resource.  We are hopeful that these classes will be successful and we will be able to expand the program offerings in the future. For this session, all courses will run on Wednesday evenings, beginning on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 - Wednesday, May 29, 2019. (Note - classes will not be held on Wednesday, April 17, 2019 due to school vacation) You can check out the different course descriptions below. Additionally, there are two attachments at the bottom of this page:
  • General Information - This page give some general information about the program, including policies and procedures.
  • Course Registration - You can print out this form and use it to complete the registration process.

We are so thankful to the community of Westport for overwhelmingly supporting the construction of the new Westport Middle – High School.  It is expected that this project will be complete and open for student/community usage in September 2021. If you’ve driven by the site for this project recently (the former location of the Westport Middle School on Old County Road), you will notice that there is a lot of action on site.  The middle school building has been completely demolished and the company is now hauling away all materials using their safety procedures and protocols. It is an exciting time to be in Westport – as we make preparations for the opening of the new building in 2021 which will house students in grades 5-12, I anticipate that we will be able to continue to grow our adult education program offerings, utilizing the state-of-the-art resources that will be in the new building.
I hope there is a course offering that piques your interest for our 2019 Spring offerings.  I have always wanted to learn to play guitar, but the boot camp class may be more beneficial to me – I’m always looking for ways to stay fit and healthy!
If you have suggestions for offerings that we might want to consider in the future, please feel free to reach out and share your thoughts.  Additionally, if you have a special skill or talent that you would like to share with members of the community, please contact me as well. We will be developing our fall offerings list in early June.

Participants should come to class with a sewing machine and a variety of fabric (100% cotton is best).  Additional materials will be discussed on the first day of class. If participants knew how to thread their machine prior to the first class, that would be helpful but not a requirement.

Depending on the interest of the participants, the class could culminate in a public reading of a polished piece by participants for invited family and friends.

This course would be helpful to people who are considering writing seriously and desire feedback from peers as well as from the instructor.  It is not a “how to publish your first novel” class; rather, it will focus on sharpening writing skills and thinking like a writer, rather than writing a novel with a hook or how to write a query letter to an agent.

The instructor has worked in the Westport Community Schools since 2008.  He is also a writer and published his first novel, Hodge, in 2017.  He has also taught writing courses at UMass Dartmouth.

Participants should come to class with a notebook to write in and pens to write with.  Laptops are optional for participants. While there is no required text, the instructor will suggest some books to participants that are interested.
