Through professional development opportunities offered within and outside the district, Westport teachers, administrators and support personnel learn about current, best teaching practices and participate in school improvement efforts and decision making.

The schools have 5 full days and 2 half-days of regularly-scheduled professional development for staff each year, for a total of more than 36 hours of professional learning aimed at supporting quality education in the district. Teachers and administrators have additional opportunities to plan, share ideas and engage in professional development during after-school sessions, summer institutes, grade-level meetings and common planning times.

Integration of 21st century skills into the curriculum is a priority of the professional development program.  Such professional development efforts help to ensure that district teachers rank as "Highly Qualified" according to state guidelines.  A District Professional Development Committee oversees planning and evaluating the Professional Development program.
