I am pleased to present you with our draft plan for reentry. I am very appreciative of all the input that we received over the past couple of months. Please know this document is still a draft as we want to continue to get your feedback and make necessary adjustments, but it at least provides you with some more detailed information than you have been previously provided.
We need to have a final version available to submit to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education by Friday, August 14, 2020. Next week, the school committee will make a final determination of the learning model that we intend to implement for the beginning of the school year. As a disclaimer, even once we have submitted our plan, there still may be adjustments based on the trajectory of COVID-19 in our community, continued feedback and guidance from the state, and based on feedback from the school community.
We recognize that no plan can address every scenario or meet the needs of each individual, but I believe that this plan best acknowledges the current state of the pandemic and provides for learning opportunities in a safe environment for students and staff. While the school committee will make the final determination of our preferred plan, my recommendation, as of today, is to begin the year for all students in a hybrid model and re-evaluate at the end of October (or sooner if there is a significant change in the pandemic locally or statewide under the direction of the Governor).
The plan is somewhat overwhelming, as we tried to capture as much information for families and staff as possible to address questions and concerns that have been raised about the various learning models. I am in the process of creating a ‘cheat’ sheet, that summarizes the key points of the plan and refers families back to specific sections of the plan to get more details about specific topics. That document will be available by the end of the weekend.
I am also including a document that summarizes the results of the family survey that was administered this weekend. Results from the survey completed in June, as well as partial results from the August survey are included in the plan document, but the separate attachment presents the summary of all results received as of this morning. Thank you for taking time to complete the survey. Staff will receive a separate email with a document summarizing the results of the staff survey that was administered this week.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all members of the Westport school community for your patience, flexibility and insights as we have worked to develop this plan. I appreciate the ways in which we have worked together to identify a potential plan for instruction for the students of Westport.
If you have any thoughts or feedback you would like to share regarding the plan, we have set up the following email address specifically for Reentry plan feedback. The address is email@example.com
